Bakers of the Future!
5th and 6th class created some scrumptious buns as we gear up for the Christmas period! They measured, mixed and baked in their groups. Our pupils got creative with their toppings to finish off their masterpieces! Well done!!
September Activities
So far this year we have undertaken some really exciting new projects as well as a very interesting excursion. I
Glasraí Vegetable Farm visit
In late September we were invited to have a walk around the local Glasraí organic vegetable farm. It was a real learning experience for us all and a real pleasure to sample some of the produce. We also got to harvest some pumpkins in time for Haloween.
Vex Robotics
This year, our school has been lucky enough to be accepted into the VEX Robotics competition. This is a really exciting robotics and coding program run in conjunction with ATU and ThermoKing. We are very lucky to also have a parent who is very experienced in this area in Iseult Mangan coming in to help us out.
The first phase of the program involved building the arena where the robot will eventually complete the tasks - "Tús maith leath na hoibre"

Halloween '21
Science Week 2020
As part of Science week 2020 the 5th and 6th classes explored the different things we can do to keep our bodies healthy. We looked at the importance of proper nutrition and physical exercise. We then investigated the comparison between BPM when exercising and calories burned and compared how different exercises raise our BPM's. Some of these exercises certainly got our hearts pumping!!!
Nature Walk/ Survey of Our Environment
Earlier this year, the children in 5th &6th conducted a nature walk/ environmental survey of the school grounds and surrounding areas. They identified trees, plants and wildflowers growing in the area. They also identified any litter black spots in the grounds of the school. They checked on the school's vegetable garden and identified what vegetables were growing and what ones were ready for harvesting.
Stem Activities
Marble Mazes
The children worked in small groups to design and build their own unique marble mazes.
They were encouraged to draw and label their maze design before commencing the construction of the maze. A range of different materials were used and offered to the children. The children worked in groups to select their preferred materials. They watched a PowerPoint beforehand which offered a chance to discuss the suitability or unsuitability of certain materials for different uses within the maze

Science Week 2020
Flood Barriers
The children worked in small groups to design and construct their own flood barriers. The challenge was for the children to create a barrier that will protect the house from water for at least 1 minute. If their design is unsuccessful, their house will be destroyed! A range of materials were offered and used by the children. They worked in groups to select their preferred materials
Roller Coasters
The children worked in small groups to design and create a straw roller coaster using common materials. The children tested them using a table tennis ball.
Baking
The children in 5th &6th class have been busy this term doing lots of baking. Here are some pictures of our recent endeavors- Gingerbread People!! YUM!!
Maths Stations
For part of this term, we have been engaging in Maths stations twice a week. Here are some pictures of us working on some fraction activities
Science Week 2019
In these experiment, we tested a number of liquids to see which was the best one to clean a coin- water, vinegar, hot water, fairy liquid, lemon juice, ketchup or coke. Can you guess which one cleaned the coin best?

For engineering week 5th and 6th experimented to see what materials made the best parachute. Some of the materials they used where tissues and cloth.
Indoor Hockey
5th and 6th enjoy doing lots of different things for P.E. This picture shows 5th and 6th playing indoor hockey on a rainy day when they couldn't go outside.
Titanic Models
While learning about the Titanic during history lessons 5th and 6th class made models of the Titanic. they worked very hard to make them look similar to the real boat. We think they did a great job.
On Point with Pointillism!!
Today the children enjoyed a lesson in Pointillism. They learned that pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. We explored works of art from Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, who developed the technique in 1886.

Our School Tour - A day we'll never forget!!
The day had finally came and all the children in 5th and 6th class and not even the crazy early start could kill the enthusiasm. It was the 13th of June and we were off to Delphi Adventure Centre for a day packed with fun and activities . We left the school at 7.30 am. Although the weather wasn't the best it didn't dampen our spirits. An hour and a half later we arrived at our destination. The activities consisted of Kayaking,pier diving , abseiling and team building activities. The children really enjoyed all activities and worked up an appetite. On the way home we went to supermacs for a small treat . The day was thoroughly enjoyable. Huge thanks to all the staff at Delphi, John the bus driver and Deirdre for coming with us . Also thanks to our parents for dropping us and collecting us . Check out some photos of us enjoying our day .
Street Smart
We were really lucky because we got to go to 'Street Smart'. It was in Roundfort Hall. It is basically a workshop organised by the RSA. The facilitators spoke to us about being safe when we are out and about . It was brilliant because then we put the theory into action in the safety village . We then got a licence to say that we are indeed Street Smart !!!
Mysterious Creatures - Beware !!!
We created mysterious creatures . Fear not - they're not real , just our imaginations working overtime !!
Beautiful Summer Flowers

Our challenge was to create four different types of flowers using different materials. Check out the picture. We think they are impressive !!
Clothes from Around the World
We learned all about the different types of clothes that people around the world wear. It was really interesting to learn about the various garments that other cultures wear. We then did a little project on what we had learned and displayed it in the classroom.
The Water Lillies
We learned all about the artist Monet. He famously painted 'The Water Lillies' . We discussed his life story and the various techniques he used in his art work. We then created our own interpretations of this beautiful painting.
School Active Week
This week in 5th and 6th class we are all about keeping active. We have lots of events to help us achieve this . We are looking forward to the sponsored walk on Wednesday and the skipathon on Thursday.

Well done to our guitarist .After just two lessons she played and sang for us. Can't wait to hear her after a few more lessons !!!
The Solar System - Complete !!
Well done to all the boys and girls for working so hard to finish our solar system . The worked in groups , took turns to complete the backdrop and were very good at cleaning up the classroom after the activities .

Sincere thanks to our wonderful pupils Ella and Robert for bringing in their gorgeous rabbits to show all the boys and girls . Circles , Toffee and Caramel were very well behaved . We loved having them .
The Solar System
We have been learning all about the planets and the solar system in Geography in the last few weeks. We decided to do some art based on this topic. We started by doing a space themed backdrop. This was brilliant fun because we all worked together and put in amazing detail .We have started to make the planets. It's a messy job but really enjoyable . Check out our art in progress !!! Tourism at its best
Recently we designed our own brochures based on tourist attractions . Some children decide to promote local attractions , with others promoting places as far away as the U.S.A. they make for interesting reading . Thanks to Jake and Taylor for designing our banner .

The Book Fair is in Town !!
This week the book fair came to our school. It was filled with amazing books written by some of our favourite authors. We enjoyed visiting it on a daily basis.We bought loads of books. Check out our pics below.
Gymnastics

The children have been very busy preparing for the upcoming competition. The classroom has been filed with glorious sounds from the school band, our music group and dancing . Without a doubt this classroom is full of superb talent !!!
Football at its Best
Well done to both the boys and girls in 6th class on their recent performance at the F.A.I. soccer tournament in Ballinrobe. Both teams played wonderfully . On the day the boys qualified for the next round . The girls played superbly but unfortunately failed to make it to the next round . We are all very proud of you !!! Thanks to Rosie too and our loyal supporters .
World Book Day
Today we celebrated world Book day. We all brought in our favourite books . We then gave a presentation to our class based on the book. We used vocabulary like author, illustrator, theme and genre. While we all did wonderful presentations , Jack stole the show with his presentation on his all time favourite book 'Username Evie'. Reading is magical and transports you to another world . Our advice ....keep reading !!!!
Next week the book fair is coming to our school and we are looking forward to choosing books from the wonderful selection of books that will be available to buy .

Valentine's Day
The students made love bugs to celebrate St Valentine's Day. They also had to research and learn all the history of St Valentine. With a little hard work and team work they students all together produced a lovely wall design for all to see !!
Music Time
Our students have been practising very hard for the upcoming St Patrick's day parade which they will take part in Ballinrobe. The students really enjoy playing music together and with all this hard work we will surely be amazing on the day !!!
Operation Transformation 10 at 10

Chess Games
Our students enjoyed spending time together learning and playing the game of chess ! It was a great chance for all students to learn something new and for others to practice their strategies! It was time well spent for our students !

Today our 5th and 6th class students were baking scones in the kitchen. It was a very enjoyable morning, as the students learned how to bake scones which was hard work. They all followed the recipe very well and work together in their teams.They were then rewarded with warm scones with cream and jam !
Musical treat
Thank you to our 6th class student today for surprising us with a Cojon, and providing us with lovely music for all the students!
St Bridget's Crosses
Today is St Bridget's Day. We decided to make our own St Bridget's crosses. We brought in rushes , with a little bit of hard work and concentration. We succeeded, it was great fun we then went to mass today and got them blessed.
Cycling
This week our students continued with there cycling. They also learned a lot about cycle safety. They then in their groups designed and decorated posters highlighting the very important topic.
Confirmation Retreat
Our students travelled to Ballintubber Abbey in preparation for their Confirmation. They learned so much about the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and were enlightened about the history of the Abbey itself. They enjoyed the visit very much and now are feeling very prepared for their Confirmation
Brownies
Today's challenge for the students was to bake brownies. All of the students were very enthusiastic about the challenge,they all worked very hard together in their groups and all successfully made delicious brownies. It was a job well done ! The brownies tasted even nice with ice cream !

Duncan from the Marine Institute came to visit our class. He told us lots of exciting things about the oceans around the world . He also told us weird and wonderful facts about marine life. After Duncan left we decided that we would do a project on fish that live in the ocean. It was been really busy in our classroom getting ready to present them to Duncan. Have a look below .

Orienteering Day Fun
Last week Ms. McGing told us that we were going to have an orienteering day on Friday .We were really excited. We had been doing some work on map reading which we knew would help us on the day. Erin and Jarleth came to the school . They explained how to draw maps and the symbols that we see on maps every day. We played lots of games that helped us to understand how to navigate. We would like to thank Erin and Jarleth map the area. We would like to thank Ms. Forde for helping Jarleth and Erin map the area. The Haunted Village
In 5th and 6th class we are extremely creative and we really enjoy art. This year for Halloween we decided to make a haunted village. It was challenging but really good fun. We had to paint a backdrop, draw various things associated with Halloween on black paper, cut them out and arrange them to look like a village. We hope you like the end result . Turning Coins Activity
We decided to undertake the turning coin challenge in our classroom. We worked in groups of three. We wanted to find out how many coins we could turn over in 10 seconds using our right hands. It turns out we were pretty good at it . We then decided to find out how many we could tunr using our left hands . This was definitely more challenging for some of us!! We recorded our findings . We found the average amount of coins we could turn over in ten seconds using both our left and right hands. Then we created graphs to represent our data . It was a really fun activity . Roald Dahl Day
We recently celebrated Raold Dahl day . We love his books and find his characters really interesting. We worked in pairs to create a really exciting character . It took us a good bit of time but we think you'll agree it was worth the wait!! It was so much fun . Check out the process below on the slideshow and then the photos of our characters .

We recently went to Claremorris Athletic Track . We had so much fun. We got to run on the race tack, participate in the long jump and the high jump. We also did relays . This is a wonderful facility right on our door step!!!

Today we became engineers !! We have been learning about energy and how it is really important to conserve energy in our school . We decided to take on the challenge of building models that are powered by renewable sources of energy . It was a huge challenge but we worked hard but more importantly worked together . Well done to our boys in Scoil Chomáin Naofa. They reached the semi final of the mini sevens competition in Bekan last Thursday. We played Claremorris . Both teams werre excellent but in the end Claremorris stole the victory. Sincere thanks to Patsy Walsh our coach .
5th and 6th class children are really excited about our school band. We are working extremely hard in preparation for our debut in March. Regular updates to follow. In the meantime keep up the hard work children .You're doing great !!!

Ballinrobe Credit Union Quiz on PhotoPeach

Hosanna Rock by 5th and 6th Class on PhotoPeach
The children of 5th and 6th class performed Hosanna Rock for their Christmas concert. They definitely did us all proud!! Watch out the West End!!
5th and 6th class children had the privilege of spending a morning with the residents of Hollymount Nursing home. This was a wonderful experience for all involved. The children performed a series of Christmas carols and also played some Christmas tunes on their instruments . Sincere thanks to all the residents and staff. The children were given treats on the day provided by Pat and Margaret Hayes. Thanks to all involved.
