On May 25th 2016, we proudly represented our school at the Green School's Award Ceremony in the McWilliam Park Hotel. Miss Mc Grath along with three members of Scoil Chomáin Naofa Green Schools Committee: Sam Connelly, Rowan Fanning and Adam Walsh made their journey down to Claremorris to receive our new Energy Flag. The school and committee in particular has worked so hard to try to conserve energy and to raise awareness throughout the school. We are delighted to receive the Energy Flag and we strive to continue to save energy where ever possible. Thank you to all the children, parents and staff who continually try to raise energy awareness. Well done everyone!! :)
We are working towards our Energy Flag!!
At Scoil Chomáin Naofa we are working very hard towards achieving our second Green Flag for the school. The theme is Energy and we are all saving and conserving energy in every way we can!
Our classroom monitors always make sure that the lights are off when not in use and that doors are closed. We are in year two of the process and the deadline for the application is March 11th 2016. As a whole school we carried out the seven steps as outlined by the Green Schools Ireland.
On the 2nd of March 2016 we held a Low Energy Day where we tried to use as less energy as possible. We took a reading of the meter in the morning and in the evening. That day we only used 13KWH!
We came up with our own Green Code that we always remember. "If it's not in use, turn off the juice" "Close the door, you'll save more" I hope you can save energy at home too by simply remembering our Green Code!
Litter Finally, We are ready to start working towards achieving our first green flag for the school. We are in the process of selecting our committee and will be getting work on the first theme which is Litter & Waste very shortly. Check back regularly for updates on how and what we are doing!!

Environmental Review- Litter & Waste
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
We reused old yoghurt pots to make bird seed cakes for the birds we see flying around the school. We needed old yoghurt pots, pieces of string, lard, cheese, bird seeds and raisins. We watched the chaffinch, the goldfinch, the blue tit, the blackcap and the wagtail gobble them all up.
Each classroom has three bins.
One for landfill waste
One for recycling
One for compost
We bring our lunches in lunch boxes to reduce our waste of tinfoil and plastic bags.
We recycle all paper and plastics which have the recycling logo on them.
We can't wait to use some of the compost in our school's vegetable garden later in the year to see all of our vegetables grow.
WEEE Ireland
We also have a battery recycling box which is situated in the entrance hall.
We drop used batteries into the box on our way into school.
