Harvest Fair
Our school recently held a Harvest Fair in our school grounds. It was an opportunity for our community to come in and see our school as well as an opportunity for our students to show off some of their artistic flair. There were loads of stalls selling crafts that the children had made both in school and at home. Our senior classes set up and ran a very popular games room. Our parents Council provided teas, coffees, hot chocolates and treats on the day. We also had a scrumptious Cake Sale with cakes and bakes of all shapes and sizes on sale on the day, all of which were prepared and baked by families in the school and the classes in the school. The book fair was another popular attraction on the day with hundreds of books coming in and swapping hands. We'd like to thank Western Vintage club for coming in and adding a special dimension to the day showing some of the really interesting artefacts they have collected.

Well done Ríona! A busy weekend for our 6th class student Ríona Kelly. On Saturday she ran in the Connacht Cross Country finals, finishing 11th and qualifying for the All Ireland final.
She followed this on Sunday with a player of the match performance in Kilmaine Ladies' U13 victory in the League final! A very talented young lady!!! |

September Return
We were delighted to re-open our doors in September and welcome back our students as well as a special welcome to our new students. We wish them and all our students the best of luck in the coming year and hope, above all, that are happy during their time here in our school. |
Our infants have joined school life seamlessly! |
Cross Country
This year we had 24 students represent our school in the South Mayo cross country competition. During the first few weeks back at school a huge number of our students tested their resilience, determination and athleticism in an attempt to represent the school at the competition. Those lucky enough to be chosen went on to indeed represent our school really well and we couldn't have been prouder of them.
A special mention must be given to our 1st & 2nd class runners who took on the tough Ballinrobe course for the first time.
Congratulations to our medal winners, Leah Moran in the 1st & 2nd class race, Ruby Moran in 3rd & 4th and Ríona Kelly who finished second in the 5th & 6th class race. Ríona has since gone on to qualify through the county stage to the Connaught Final to be held later this month.
Comhghairdeas don ár lúthchleasaí go léir agus t-adh mhór don Ríona ins an Ceannais Connachta.

Visit to Glasraí
Our 5th & 6th class recently had the opportunity to visit one of our locality’s most exciting businesses. Joe and Aoife Reilly run an organic farm just outside Hollymount village. We got to see how the farm works, learning about crop rotation, sourcing organic seedlings and so much more. We also had the chance to sample some of the tasty (and spicy) produce as well as harvesting some pumpkins!
Thanks to Joe, Aoife, Wayne and all at the farm for a very informative and exciting day out!

School Tour to Bunratty Castle & Craggaunowen- 1st to 4th Class
On Tues.14th June the bus was full of excited 1st to 4th Class children who were headed to Co.Clare. Our first stop was Craggaunowen where we saw how people lived in ancient Ireland. We saw a ringfort, crannog, fulacht fia and the Brendan Boat. We also saw wild boar with an adorable little piglet who last year got loose and trashed the ringfort! Next stop Bunratty Castle. After a tour of the castle we had lunch and then headed to the playground. We were then let loose in the replica village. We went to school for two minutes, attended the doctor, visited the photographer etc... Quite quickly a queue formed outside the sweetshop! No surprise there. Soon we were gripping enormous lollipops, trading Toxic Sour sweets and eating jelly burgers. Many of us topped this off with hot chocolates. Amazingly nobody was sick on the journey home. What was the highlight of the day?? You guessed it, being free to wander on the street and spending our money in the shop!
Congratulations to Second Class who made their First Holy Communion last Saturday.
PUPPETRY: We have been very lucky over the past few weeks to have had Carmel Balfe visiting our school. She specialises in puppetry and the children have learned how to make their own puppets as well as use them in an imaginative way.
Easter Concert
Here are some pictures from the junior half of the school.
The Infants performed The Three Billy Goats Gruff and 1st & 2nd entertained us with JJ and the Beanstalk.

Support for the people of Ukraine
Our school community was delighted to help with the relief effort for those effected by the war in Ukraine. A huge amount of donations of clothes and other essentials were gathered in a very short period early last week. A special thanks to the parents involved in organising the event and a special mention to the parent who provided transport of the goods to the depot in Galway.
The victims of this atrocity will e held in our thoughts and prayers. |

Well done to all involved! |

Scrumptious Soup: Second Class decided to make some nourishing soup. We made vegetable soup using onions, celery, parsnips, carrots and potatoes. We chopped all the vegetables, popped them into a large pot with two stock cubes and simmered. Next we blitzed the soup and hey presto, delicious soup! We made enough to give some to 3rd and 3th Class too. Yum, yum!

Phase 1 of the our new development, an outdoor classroom, began at the weekend. This new development will provide the opportunity for our students to get outdoors at more times during the day with the outdoor classroom enabling teachers to take lessons such as story-telling, drama, music, scientific exploration of mini beasts and lots of artistic opportunities all in the outdoors. Thank you to all of our parents who have helped out so far and we look forward to working with more of you in the coming phases. Keep an eye on here and on our Twitter account for the next stages.

We are delighted to finally the share the project that was undertaken in our school last year. Local artist Catherine Flynn, a past pupil of our school, worked with our pupils to create and produce this masterpiece that brings vibrancy and colour to a whole new level in our school. Thanks to all the teachers, The Arts Council and our co-ordinator Katherine Simon for helping make this happen.
If any parents would like to see the mural please feel free to have a walk around the back of the school when collecting your children someday.
A true work of Art.

Confirmation Class '20-'21
Similar to our communion, this certainly was a strange time to hold our confirmation, especially having to welcome first years back among us! It was a very special occasion nonetheless and we'd like to thank Fr. Mike for making it so special and enjoyable. Thanks also to Mary Kelly for her preparation of the church. And of course, thanks to our participants for the presentation of gifts, readings, prayers , singing and music which made the event so memorable.

Return to School
A very busy and happy return to school over the past few weeks! Our junior end got to test out our new iPads while the senior end got their hands dirty preparing our vegetable beds!
Roundfort Runs
Throughout February, our school community, students, families, teachers and past pupils took on the challenge of getting out and running, walking or cycling as much as possible in the month. The main aim for this initiative was to provide motivation for everyone to keep moving and exercising by setting aims and targets for themselves that could be completed within our 5km limit.
We attached a fundraising element to this in an aim to develop our IT and music resources within the school. Thanks to a very successful Parents Association fundraiser and some government funding we were recently able to buy new IT hardware, 8 iPads and 8 Chrome Books. The next phase is to buy software and coding games to compliment these resources.
Our school also has a bank of musical instruments which we can lend to our students to try their hand at and explore their interest levels. This provides a fantastic opportunity for our children and further funding would enable us to expand the bank of instruments thus providing even more opportunities.
To all who have already contributed we would like to say a huge thank you, and if you would like to still contribute you can through the following link. Fundraiser by Scoil Chomain Naofa Board of Management : Roundfort NS Runs for February (gofundme.com)

Delia Murphy
The 11th of February 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of Mayo's Queen of song, Delia Murphy. Born in 1902, Delia attended Roundfort NS from 3rd class, in the old school which is now Lyons' pub. She is said to have learned many of her songs from visiting travellers who camped out in Featherbed Lane, just down from her home in Annefield. Delia went on to have an illustrious career recording songs such as "The Spinning Wheel" and "If I were a Blackbird"
While in UCG she met Dr. Thomas J Kiernan and the pair married in 1924, Dr. Kienan went on to become an international ambassador and during the second world war Dr.Kiernan and Delia are credited with saving up to 6,500 Jewish lives.
Delia Murphy died at her Cottage in Chapelizod in 1971.
Just this year, Mayo.ie organised an event to promote Mayo Culture where local artists recorded one of Delia's most famous songs, The Spinning Wheel. The connection to our school goes on as two of our former students, Lisa Canny and Niall Hughes were involved in this production. You can see this video below

Mrs. Bell
This weekend, our school flag flies at half mast as we mark the passing of former Scoil Chomain Naofa teacher, Mrs. Mary Bell.
Mrs Bell taught in Roundfort for 32 years, from 1968 to 2000 .
As the comments on social media this week have testified, she was a very special teacher indeed. The serenity of her classroom reflected the serenity of her nature. So many people have shared fond memories. There was fundraising silences, a full day of silence in the classroom, only Mrs Bell could have managed this feat! There was gold stars a plenty, each one cherished by the receiver. T.C. or religion, from 12:00 to 12:30 everyday without fail. The tables being piled up at the side of the room for drama on Fridays. Everyone hiding their wooden rulers when it was time for band practice!!!!!(Mrs Bell was a very enthusiastic drummer!!!)
Without doubt, Mrs. Bell will be remembered very fondly by all those who passed under her tutelage.
We would like to offer our sincerest condolences to Marcia, Richard, Harry and the extended Bell family.

Raffle and Mayo Day
On Friday last the children wore their colours to show our support for our county football team. Unfortunately it wasn't to be for the team yesterday but we are no less proud of these lads this week than we were last week. Their dedication to the cause should be a source of inspiration to each and every young person to chase their dream. P.S. - Doesn't the green and red really suit Ms. Glynn!!!!!
We also held our Christmas raffle on Friday. A huge thank you goes out to all of the businesses in the locality who sponsored prizes and to the parents for getting so many sponsors on board and for selling tickets. The majority of prizes went home on Friday with the children but there are still some to be delivered. Thanks again to all involved.
